The ESOS Act is under review. An issues paper was released on 23 September 2009 and submissions received are now being considered. (The submissions period closed on 30 October 2009.) The review aims to ensure Australia’s regulatory framework protects consumers and maintains rigorous standards for education providers wishing to enter and deliver courses in the international education sector.
- COAG has committed to improve the quality of education for international students and their well-being by developing a comprehensive National International Student Strategy to be put in place during the 2010 academic year.
- The International Student Roundtable on 14 and 15 September 2009 gave participants the opportunity to discuss issues affecting their experience in Australia and to suggest ideas on how to address their concerns. It also initiated the creation of a hotline for students to raise concerns, anonymously if they wish.
- An International Students Taskforce has also been created within the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
