Prolegis is a legal practice that provides services to not for profit organisations including independent schools, charities, churches and industry associations.

We provide advice primarily in the areas of:

  • corporate regulation and governance
  • tax structuring
  • all areas of law affecting school enrolment policy
  • child protection
  • employment and anti-discrimination legislation.

our fees

We provide legal services at reasonable rates. We conduct our practice in ways that keep our fees at a level our not for profit clients can afford.

Engaging a legal advisor

Asking for legal advice is daunting—you’re thinking, what will this cost?
We try very hard to keep our bills realistic—especially since many of our clients are not-for-profits with limited resources. However, we won’t last long if we provide advice free of charge or at too low a rate. Because that’s how we earn an income—by selling our time and our legal expertise.

Here’s a brief explanation of how our charges work:

After you approach us for advice we will send you a Retainer Agreement that sets out our charges (we’re legally obliged to do this). This document may also include an estimate of the time we think we’ll need to spend on the matter. (But remember, it’s not always possible to give an estimate if the matter could have complexities of which we’re unaware at first.) You can then decide whether or not you want to use our services.
If you engage us you can ask us to operate on a capped basis, that is, to spend time to a certain value after which we won’t spend more time without your agreement.

Keeping your costs down

You can help to keep your costs down by:
- thinking about what you want from us before you contact us, this may mean doing some research before approaching us
- giving us clear instructions, along with as much relevant supporting documentation as possible
- doing what you can yourself—remember we will charge for time you ask us to spend
- keeping emails and phone calls as brief as possible.

networking and referral

Should you require advice on a matter outside our areas of specialty we will direct you to a person or firm qualified to advise you.
